Title: Uppgrading firmware?
Post by greenmonster on 01/18/11 at 21:14:16
To help me & maybe others,
some questions to clarify instructions here: http://www.jefferies-au.org/MyECU/index.htm

1. Cable-connecting:

I guess the cable PC-ECU has to be made, you can`t buy it?

Quote:
If you look at the 5 pin connector on the layout of MyECU, we'll call the top pin ( earth pin ), pin 1.

Earth pin1 is the closest to the big chip?

2. Flashing software:

http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/avrdude
Link (fr MyECU site) doesn`t seem to work.
Which version works for W98SE and newer OS?
Anyone has a link where to get it?

3. Optimiser:
It has to be uppgraded separately?

I`m sure there will be more when I get around to actually do this....  ::)

Please answer one question at the time & label them 1-2-3, it gets much clearer then, really.

2. Flashing software:
I use version 5.0 (old now but works fine) and it came as avrdude-5.0-w32.zip. You should be able to google that name. I recall having to run "install_giveio.bat" once from the bin/ folder in order to get it to work.

3. Optimiser:
Separately yes (and it's a separate file), but you should do it right after the ECU since they need to be same version. You flash the Optimiser just like the ECU. It needs to be powered, I just connect it to the ECU and turn ignition on.

That description was written when there was only the original My16M. A bit meaningless now.

Pin 1 is the pin on the left.

It looks like avrdude for windows is relegated to a component of WinAVR.

Otherwise the instructions f uppgrading is correct at your site?

I`m very insecure w this procedure, although I flashed a BIOS or 2, will follow these instructions in detail.

Yes the instructions are correct. The file name may change but that is all.

I've made all sorts of mistakes but they never ended up in disaster. Usually when something's wrong you get some kind of misleading error message from AVRdude, and nothing was changed.

I've updated the upgrading firmware page with a picture of the cable.

Should be fixed now. You might need to refresh your browser.

Interested to know how you got on with this process. Have you managed to upgrade yet? My experience - I had never done this before - was pretty interesting but once accomplished one wonders what all the fuss (self made in most cases) was all about.
