Title: Ready for the big step. Post by coldnorth on 08/11/11 at 22:24:40
Then I am ready for the big step.Installing the Myecu to my bike.I bought the Myecu almost a year ago but haven't dare to install it yet.I have been doing a lot of reading on the forum and in the user manual and frankly I'm a bit scared. All those tecnikel terms and shorts scares me a bit.Now I have done all the preparations, set the Tps both closed and idle, and balance is perfect. The bike is a 1100 sport ie 1997 with KN filters Mistral crossover and carbon cans.
Now the big question. Is there anybody out there who have, and want to share a appropriate map as a start. The summer is short here up in the mountains, and I dont want to spend it at the computer. In fact,I'm not god at that.Loocks like Raz have some pretty god maps and we are practickly neighbours as I live in Norway. http://cajinnovations.com/yabb0/Templates/Forum/default/cheesy.gif |

Just do it!
I (and probably several others) have been in your shoes in the past and look back wondering what all the fuss was about. A whole new world of nerdiness beckons. :D Take it step by step and if in doubt continue to fire in questions here - you'll receive (mostly) good advice and gain from the collective experience of MyECU users. There are no silly questions believe me. Enjoy the experience. I'm just across the North Sea, and an 1100 sport inj owner so appreciate the short season we have too. Razs map is well proven and I would recommend it if you don't want to go for Cliffs starter. Gavin |

Just for laughs I can tell you that after 30,000 kms or so with MyECU, I put the OEM back. Reason being I'm selling the bike (sooner or later) and I have learned how to make the OEM run "good enough" so I reckoned I'd get more money back if selling separately. All was fine for a thousand kms and then I sold the MyECU to a fellow who needed it for his Daytona RS.
OK, so what happens within f*cking TEN kilometers after the MyECU left my shelf? You guessed it, my OEM turned itself into a brick, completely without reason. I rode, I stopped, next time I turned ignition on the fuel pump never stops. No spark at all. Not a life sign from diagnostic LED. I just confirmed that the chip didn't came loose, then ordered a new MyECU from Cliff 8-) |

Karma. The old girl realises you are letting her go and couldn't take it - so fried her chips. Hope you stick around the forum Raz - it will be dull without you and your "steam train"
:-) g If any of you are bored:-http://youtu.be/Z-wLN0QevyM - a classic pass in the west of Scotland done last month. Should see it with snow! |

Didn't see one tree. Is that above the tree line?

Hi Cliff - road goes from sea level at Loch Kishorn (east of the Isle of Skye) to the top of the pass at about 2000 feet and down to the Applecross village and pub where really big scallops and squat lobster with a Chardonnay can be had. The irony is the road is free from sand and grit from the winter just when the tourists arrive and bog you down. Have done the pass in 17 minutes but ran into fog at the summit - that was a brown trouser moment! Also had a clutch cable go 1/3 into the run (edit - on a separate occasion!). Teeth were pretty sore when I got over the hill.
:-) No trees - red deer eat them all. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/applecross/peninsula/index.html |

The good news is SWMBO now got her own bike so the main reason for me for replacing the steam racer is void! |

Up and running, within a week from the breakdown. I really hate desoldering the connector from the OEM, the rest is nice therapy. |

If it wasn't for the potential of maybe reinstating the original then a different connector would be the way to go. Mmmmm - where's that RS catalogue.....there is probably one half the size and with a better IP "rating".
Good your fired up again - I just made a major booboo this w/e - broke an ez out off in a left pot exhaust manifold stud - hope I can find a decent spark erosion engineer round here. There was an inevitability about changing them out that screamed CAUTION! Anyway gives me a chance to tidy up some other bits that were niggling me. Plugs looked a really nice colour too! |

Been there, done that. Spark erosion is really voodoo magic. I mean, how the hlll can it vaporize the bolt yet not destory the threads? |

Cheers for that - still feel like a dickhead - could see it happening in slomo..... ach well .... never mind.

Didn't go the spark erosion route - nearest one is 100 miles away apparently. Good old drill out and infill by class welder in Inverness then re-drill and tap. Back on the road last w/e and over the hills to the RAF Leuchars airshow where the last remaining Vulcan bomber flew by - magic howl from engines on throttle up :D.
Still suffering from the Cat 5 plug in the ecu socket to the optimiser coming loose when I sit on the seat hard - anyone else got this problem? Simple resolutions? Thinking of hard wiring to pcb - it's the fact it sticks up then has to go through 90 deg out of the rubber grommet and the seat base is directly above - any movement with my lardy ass and it pushes it off center and I lose optimiser and tacho. Fortunately the bike still runs. Inconvenient rather than major PITA - if you'll pardon the pun. |

What's pun? Thought it's called French. Anyway, do you have a V11 with the ecu mounted with the connector facing upwards? Turn it round then, below of it should be enough space for the harness and the Cat5 connector. |
Title: Re: Ready for the big step. Post by Mad Farquhar on 09/13/11 at 23:39:55
Pun is a play on words.
It's an 1100 sport so the rotation of the ecu would be awkward with the long connector strip on starboard side. Also investigating a socket http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/0437143/ which runs parallel with plane of pcb but need to check clearance and how I would disconnect without having to take the main cover off each time. I have fingers like cows udders! |

If you have the lid on you should just try securing the cable to the lid with tape.

I have an answer and a question. First, as to Mad Farquhar's connector problem, I drilled a hole in the side of the ECU about 1/4" in diameter, in line with the ECU port. I installed a grommet in the hole for sealing purposes, and then fed the Cat 5 cable through the grommet with no connector installed. After installing the CAT 5 connector on the inside end of the cable, I used a small pair of wire cutters to cut a shallow V at the back side of the connector, opposite the retainer spring. That gives enough room so that you can bend the cable and leaves room for the rubber plug to be installed and not interfere with the cable. The cable now comes out of the side of the ECU, and the seat doesn't make contact.
Now for my question: When I look at the Optimiser, it shows the current map location as x,y not y,x, right? So the correct idle position would be 1,0 (tps 103,idle 1050), right? It seems that my idle position is shown as 0,1. Where is my error? |

Yes its a little confusing but it is throttle, rpm so 0,1 is correct for idle.

COnewbie, can you post a picture of your connector idea? |

Here is the link to the photos documenting the changes to my Sport 1100i. I added pictures of the Cat 5 cable mod today. You can't see the V-shaped cut I mentioned, because it is under the bend in the cable.

I thought about my cable mod overnight, and I have what I think is a better suggestion. I drilled a hole because I intend to leave the cable in place forever. You might want to forego drilling a hole, and use a rat-tail file to make a U-shaped notch in the side of the ECU case just barely big enough to accommodate the rubber grommet. Then you can split the grommet, put it around the cable, and trap it with the ECU cover. The aluminum duct tape I use is more than adequate to fasten the cover down securely, especially if you locate the notch to one side or the other of the rubber plug. Hope this helps.
