Title: Harvesting From Old ECUs Post by sign216 on 11/20/11 at 23:09:18
I've got an old Ducati 900SS ECU, with the correct square style case with fins, etc (thanks to Ebay!).
Do I lever off the back to get access inside? There's a little sealer, but it shouldn't be hard. However I don't want to start off by breaking things. Am I right that once open, I de-solder the pin connector and the barometric pressure sensor? Is that correct? |

Carefully pry off the sheet metal lid, After that, you can remove the board from the case by unscrewing the four(?) nuts.
Slide the connector/board assembly up out of the case. Once you've got the board removed you can start to unsolder the connector. That's the tricky part, it helps to have a solder sucker or solder wick. Patience is your friend. Good luck with it! |

Thanks RP. I suspect desoldering the pin connector will be a test for my skills.

I run a craft knife around the seal first.
I have a proper desolder tool and still find it a challenge. I don't know how others manage. |

By using brute force more or less. The pins are such a tight fit that in nearly all cases the vias were pulled out, too. Next problem might be that if the pins get overheated they will melt loose inside of the connector.
Anyway, a BIG iron, a solder pump, some well sucking wick and one or two screwdrivers normaly do the job. Hubert |

I used a bit more finesse.
Went over it once with a solder sucker, then again with wick, then gently pried it away as I heated the remaining stuck pins. Didn't pull any pads, and it came out with no damage. But it's not something I'd like to do for a living! pete |

Admin, thanks for the suggestion to use the knife.
RatP and Luhbo, I'll use both a desolder pump and wick, although it will still be a chore. Thanks for the tips. Joe |
