Title: Communication between ECU and laptop
Post by Bill on 01/04/12 at 18:52:34
I have a Moto Guzzi Sport 1100i. I recently had a MYECU installed.
It is going OK but some bugs need ironing out, However I can't get started because I am having trouble getting a connection between myECU and my laptop. Looking into the "Device Manager" on my laptop I see I only have BT (bluetooth) USB ports available.
I do not have the Intel(R) Active Management Technology SOL (COM3) or Communiocations Port (COM1). Could this be my problem, and if so does anyone know how I can get the things to talk?
I have the proper comms cable supplied by Cliff with the ECU.

When you insert the dongle you should see windows going through its hardware discovery and  it should end with either "your hardware is ready to use" or "could not find a driver" or similar.
What are you seeing?

Only in the former case will you see a com port appear.

you can find drivers from www.ftdichip.com

Thanks for reply.
A note saying "New Hardware Found" comes up and then  goes to the Install Wizard which then asks for a driver. As there is no driver everything stops here. I am going to try it with a different computer and see if that helps.
I will have a look at that drivers site and see if anything there might help with the coms port.

I've got a new laptop, but it's not communicating with MyECU.  I've gone through the comms page without success.  Also tried Hyperterminal (HT), as well as several HT alternative programs.

Essentially, whenever I change the MyECU comms port to the correct port, it doesn't remember it.  It immediately reverts to port 1.

Any ideas?

So HT didn't work?

The port 1 issue sounds like registry permissions. You've seen the serial port document I've made? That covers the registry hack for this.

Do you mean the "Getting the Comms workin" page?

Or is it a different page?

Thanks.  I'll follow that and give this another go.

Still not working.  I cannot change the ECUController Configuration to the correct port.  When I try to change it, it's not saved.

I've tried to overcome registry protections with ECUController.reg file.  I've downloaded the file, changed it to the correct port, saved it, and run it.  ECUController still won't change the port.

I've tried it manually, by typing in the 4 registry lines in the Google document, saving it, and then running it.
I still cannot change the port in ECUController.

This is a new Dell laptop running Windows 7.

Any ideas?

If you open up regedit and navigate to the key what do you see?

Regedit, local machine, CAJInnovation, ECUController, shows two listings;
(Default)    REG_SZ    value not set
ComPort    REG_SZ     com7

The correct com port is com7.
I changed (default) to com7, but that didn't help.  ECUController was still stuck on com1.  So I changed (default) back to "value not set."

What do you think?

I'll give you a special one that produces some extra debug soon

Thank you in advance.  I look forward to it.  Sorry to add to your administrative burdens.

Hardware issues forced the retirement of the old laptop.  Tried Windows 8 on the new one, and I turned it back to the vendor, to get a new laptop that still had Windows 7.  8 might be "the hot thing" for tablets and cell phones, but I didn't see an advantage for a standard computer.  Sometimes it seems like Windows peaked with XP.

The problem was fixed by running MyECUController with Admin privileges (thanks Cliff).  Right click on MyECUController, and select Admin.  This allowed me to change the port settings, etc.

It was a simple solution, but finding that as the "magic bullet" wasn't easy.  Thanks again!
