Title: MV Agusta Brutale + MyECU??
Post by MIK0 on 01/20/12 at 09:27:23
Hello everyone, I am a new member - Miko from Croatia.
Considering that Italy is a neighboring country, it's no wonder that I have Italian motorcycle, it's Agusta Brutale 750s, MY 2005

I was searching the forum but can not find the information that someone is already installed "MyECU" in Agusta, even though her heart is an ancient IAW 16M ECU.
Well, anyone?

Currently I have installed a full titanium exhaust "MV Corse" that comes with the appropriate EPROM. There are some small differences in the original and the MV Corse EPROM but I do not seem so different as expected, the exhaust is another story but not the EPROM.

Since I had some electrical problems common to model Brutale, (I replaced the so-called SPU module) I did the homework and study what and how the ECU actualy works. Now, that I no longer have the fear of the "gray box" I started thinking that there still can be improved by using the "MyECU".

All suggestions and comments are welcome.

There is only one bike I know of that differs from the standard setup when using the 16M and that was a Laverda. Can't recall the exact model.
Where it differed is that the engine timing pickup was off the crank with a wheel that had 12 teeth with one missing.
The standard setup using a wheel off the cam and with 48 teeth ( 2 missing )

Hi guys

The Mv uses a 24 missing 2 thooted wheel at crank speed. Also the cooling fans are controled by the ecu.

The bike is a inline 4 with cylinders working in pairs or wasted spark.

Can Myecu be made to work in this setup?

Stock ducati ecu work on mv's so everything should be very similar.

MyECU was designed to have this flexibility but of course it hasn't been tested. There is another crank driven bike in development at the moment although that is progressing slowly.

If you are technically capable then there is a good chance that together we can get MyECU working for that bike.

I've been working with electronics for some time and have a scope to test stuff so i think we can make the ecu work.

My bike cuts spark at 13500rpm, a lot higher than guzzi's and ducs. Do you think my ecu will work well with this rev range?

I think the most dificult part will be setting the angle between the sensor and the top dead sensor mark on the timming wheel. How that is setup on normal 48 theet wheel?

here's a pic of timming wheel setup.

When you have an oscilloscope things become a lot easier.
You should get a dual capture of the timing output and the coil voltage so that you can see where it needs to fire. This can be 600V spike so use a couple of resistors >10K  to bring it down to a safe range. Say a divide by 10.

Do this for the two coil outputs.

You'll also need to set yourself up to do firmware upgrades. There was another thread just recently - http://cajinnovations.com/yabb0/YaBB.pl?num=1336367157
Looking at the picture it looks like the first pulse needs to be fired at the 7th pulse.

So to make shure I understand, you want me to insert one probe on the coil output and another on the timming wheel input to see the timming?

From I can see from a diagnostic software I have to read the WM16 ecu, the bike varies the ignition with temperature when cranking and setles to 10 to 12 degrees atdc, for some strange reason. Only mv know why they chose this ignition timming for idling. Not shure this wont change the meseurements.

From looking at the timming wheel that right, The piston 1 and 4 are on tdc when timming wheel is on the 7th pulse.

The piston 2 an 3 are on tdc on the timming wheel 19th pulse.

I think the rest is simple has the engine is even fire so we need a spark event every 180º.

What do you think ?

Best Regards

Not the output of the coil, the output of the ECU to the coil

I think the first line of you map will need to be
MyECU Cfg TDC=0x0600, CylOffs=360, PulsesPer=24, MissingPulses=2

Yes the coil output on the ecu. ::)

I've been updating the map with the values I have from the stock ign and fuel tables.

One thing i've noticed is that my bike runs a lot less injector duration than the guzzi, probably because it's a 750 and it squirts twice so the actual injector duration is twice what's on the table, I think.

Hope to have more progress next week

Hi Guys

Cliff and I are getting there. Today the bike ran for more than a few seconds for the first time! :D

Still a lot of stuff test but a lot closer to a working ECU.

Had to change the spark Mosfets to IGBT designed for driving coils, as the stock mosfets, die in seconds. I think this is caused by the coils driving two plugs, so it has a lot more voltage kickback. Also made a small mod to the driver stage as this parts are logic level.

These parts have a internal voltage clamp so they work great. 8-)

Well done Rick. I hope it wasn't too painful an exercise.

Those IGBT are 400V. The FETs I use are 600V. I think the main thing with these is the higher current rating. They are ~20A whereas the FETS are ~10A.

I know it's not a thumping twin but here it goes. 8-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6bjH1lAz8c

Already sounds better than stock with that stupid ignition setting at idle of 12 degrees after top dead center.

Now have to make it start without effort.

I have to say that the mods were really minor and the desing works very well. The only real mod was the spark circuit and thats because of the diferent coils.

I remember I used 13 amps fets and they died anyway, so I dont think it's over current because I reduced the dwell to 1500, but you have a lot more experience than me on the subject. :)

They are clamped to 400volts so they protected against the backemf of the coil. You can change the clamping voltage, by changing the base resistor.

I have the tables for the injector dead time and the coil dwell if anyone needs it.

Cheers

Rick

Thanks for sharing that. Sounds fast, even at idle

Hi Miko,

On your MV Agusta Brutale, did you have a IAW 16M.AS?
I fried my ECU and I am likewise looking into using a MyECU.

Dear Miko

I am new on this forum. I come from Switzerland and I own one of the very first F4 750S 1+1 MV Agusta. Currently I am rebuilding the bike  to bring it into a "better then new-state" :-)
Searching the Internet for replacements of the ECU, I stumbled over your work, and of course the genius myECU Product!

It would be fantastic to replace the original unit with myECU 16M.

Since you already made some experience, I would like to ask you a few questions before ordering my own myECU kit from Australia:
- I read that you had to do quite some changes to the electronic because of the ignition coils? Is this something big?
- Great videos on Youtube. But I never saw you revving your bike up to the limit. Is myECU fast enough for the extremely high turning F4 engine (13500 RPM)?
- In other forums they state that the side stand switch Engine Shutdown ist not supported with myECU 16M. Is that correct?
- Does the standard dashboard still work (I read somewhere else that there's some direct communication between original ECU and the MV Dashboard)? I got the oldest one with the yellow tacho display.

Since my MV is one of the first ones, I would have to configure myECU for Open Loop operation, there is no Cat and no O2 sensors.

Would be great to get some kind of response :-)
Urs

The last two posts should be addressing Rickf4. He is the only one that has a MyECU on an MV.

There were a couple of enhancements made to the MyECU for the MV but these have been incorporated into the Mk VII already.

Thanks for the reply.
As you probably already recognized I am a total newbie!
I tried to get some information on "Mk VII" on google but failed...
Sorry for this stupid question: is this another type of non-OEM ECU?
:-X

The Mk VII is just the next iteration of the My16M ( and My15M ) - http://www.myecu.biz/MyECU/My16MMkVII/index.html

Hi rick, i see you haven't been online since 2015 but i am looking for the injector dead time and ignition dwell times. I was hoping that you or a fellow member might have them or could post them for me.

Cross,
There's another section of the forum called Maps, where people post the data they've worked up.  A search there might give you what you're looking for.
