No Fuel Pump Prime, No Connection to Laptop
09/24/12 at 09:21:08

I just put my finished kit into my bike.  When turning the key, there is no fuel pump prime, and I cannot get comms to work.  My laptop can't communicate with the MyECU.
I've tried Hyperterminal, but that doesn't establish comms either.

The completed kit checked out ok with the tests at the end of the instructions.

Any ideas?

So you had the ECU talking before it was put on the bike?
Lets go back to the last working scenario and move forward from there.
Lets start with checking the voltages on the input and output of the 5V regulator.

What do you mean by "had the ECU talking before it was put on the bike?"  I put it on the bike, and connected the laptop.  No attempts at comm before that.

Here are my tests, after the kit was finished:
5V at the voltage regulator output.
R32 and R33 junction had 2.5v
R34 and R35 had around 2.7v
left pins on the FETs were 0
voltage at R28 (not R28B) went to 5v, and then dropped
I installed Q5
voltage regulator (bottom of D1) showed 7.4 v

All looked good.

Is this still happening on the bench "voltage at R28 (not R28B) went to 5v, and then dropped"?
What about on the bike?

The test was on the bench, powered by a 9v battery.

Shall I check the voltage at R28, when it's on the bike?

If its still works on the bench check it on the bike and also check the voltages on the input and output of the 5V regulator.

On the bike I get the following readings:

Diode D1 = 13.4 v one side, 4.97 v on the other
R28b = 0
R28g = 0
R28gb = 0
R28 = 0

I think you've lost enough time trying to get the two kits together. It's probably best to get this to me so I can sort it out for you. I want to get you on the road.

Thank you for offering to examine it.  I'd rather tackle it myself, if possible.

I'll take it off and re-do the bench tests.  I hope those results will point out the issue.

On the bench with a 9v battery positive at L2a, I'm getting these voltages:

D1   top = 5.0v    bottom = 7.3v

R32 at R33 = 2.5v
R34 at R35 = 8.7v
Left pins of the 6 FETs all show 8.7v

Any ideas?

Those readings do not make any sense.

R32, R33 is correct. They're a voltage divider between 0 and 5V.
But so is R34, R35 so getting 8.7V there is not really possible. It would indicate that the chip was at that voltage ( same with the FET voltages. You've already determined that the voltage regulator output is 5V.
The only way the chip would get that voltage elsewhere is via the battery voltage sensors R22, R24

Further to get that voltage past the 47K would mean that you probably have a short across that resistor.

I don't see any shorts.  The joint between R34 and R35 looks "cold" so I'll renew that.  I'll also check the component placement, and do another bench test.

If there's no improvement then I'll send the board to you.

I renewed some joints and performed the tests.
I am getting the correct readings on both the bench and on the bike.
voltage regulator output (top of D1) = 4.97v
bottom of D1 = 13.4v
R32 at R33 = 2.47v
R34 at R35 = 2.72v
left pins of FETS = 0 or 0.03v
R28 goes to 5v for a second, and then back to 0

Bike's fuel pump doesn't go through the 1-2 second prime.

My laptop "sees" the serial cable, but doesn't see the MyECU unit.  I've got the correct port.  Hyperterminal doesn't help.

Monday, I'll send the unit in.

This new state seems totally different to the previous. At least it looks like the chip is still functioning. Hopefully the lack of comms is not not chip related.
Did you had the ECUController talking to the previous MyECU or this one before or is the communications new territory?

Same laptop and controller programs that worked with the 1st MyECU.  New serial cable.  I checked, and there is connectivity with all spliced cable wires on the serial cable.

I was hoping the problem was cable related, but that the fuel pump isn't priming, makes my feel the MyECU unit has the fault.

I will send out the unit tomorrow (in 16 hrs my time).
